How to Safely Remove a Skunk from A Window Well
If you live in an apartment or house that has a basement, you need to make sure that you have enough air circulation. That is why many basements are designed with a small window, which allows air and natural light to pass through.
Unfortunately, sometimes skunks can even get stuck in these small windows or fall inside the window well. When this happens, it becomes difficult to get rid of the skunk without hurting it. In the end, some skunks do manage to get themselves out when they get scared while others end up injuring themselves while trying to get out. When you face such an incident, you need to make sure that you free the animal safely and avoid getting sprayed with their fluid which has an unpleasant smell.
Why Do These Animals Get Stuck on Window Wells?
Many people are not aware of the fact that skunks have a strong sense of hearing and smell. However, the main reason why they end up getting stuck on window wells is that their sight is not very good. Another reason why they do not easily free themselves is that these animals have strong claws which they use for digging, but not suitable for climbing. That is why you need to create a new surface that they can use to walk on and free themselves.
Use a Rope and a Garbage Can
Another convenient way of removing the skunk from the window well is by using a rope and a garbage can. All you have to do is tie the rope to the garbage can handle and place smelly meat inside the garbage can. After that, slowly lower the garbage can inside the window well and wait for the skunk to go for the meat. Once inside, tilt the can so that the skunk does not jump off and slowly pull up the garbage can. Last, make sure that you are at a safe distance when releasing the animal.
Create a Path for The Skunk Using a Wooden Board.
These particular animals tend to be more active during dawn. Therefore, you might want to try and free the animal during this period. You can do this by using a wooden board. All you have to do is look for a strong piece of wood and place it on the window well. However, make sure that it is long enough so that the skunk and climb its way out without getting stuck again. Also, make sure that you place the wooden board at an angle that is not too steep so that it can be easy for the animal to climb.
Cover Up the Window Well
After getting rid of the skunk, you need to make sure that such cases do not occur again in the future. That is why you must cover the window well using a strong material such as wire mesh. Besides using a wire mesh, you can use any other material to cover your window well as long as it allows natural light to pass through.
