Armadillos are leathery little animals that live in North, Central, and South America. Even though they look like reptiles, armadillos are actually mammals. They are warm-blooded, have hair, give live birth, and nurse their babies with milk.

There are at least 21 different species of armadillo, each with its own unique appearance. Large armadillo species can grow to be nearly 5 ft. long, and weigh up to 119 lbs. Small armadillo species are as small as 5 – 6 in. long, and weigh less than a pound! As a whole, armadillos usually have tank-like bodies, with short legs and sturdy builds. They have a thick leathery “shell” of skin, which protects them from predators.
